Chris Gayle
- Biography
Chris Gayle is a Jamaican cricketer who has represented the West Indies since 1999. A professional career spanning 20+ years has turned Chris Gayle into a true sporting icon that is universally known for his calm yet destructive presence at the crease. One of West Indies most decorated players and a career filled with records, Chris Gayle has an argument to be the greatest all format opening batsmen ever. Currently he is the only cricketer to score a triple century in Tests, a double century in ODIs and a century in T20Is.
Lucas Cricket Club in Kingston, Jamaica was where Gayle developed his skills as a cricketer, with the club ultimately naming the nursey end in his honour. From this point on Gayle quickly progressed the ranks of professional cricket, he made his first-class debut for Jamaica in 1998. He played his first ODI less than a year later, and his first Test match six months after that at the age of 20.
An ironically slow start to international cricket was reinvigorated a year later as Gayle became only the third West Indian to score over 1,000 runs in a calendar year joining Sir Viv Richards and Brian Lara. Throughout Gayle’s career he has shown incredible consistency of getting big runs once established in the middle. In 2005 he scored the first-ever triple century against South Africa and in 2010 became the fourth cricketer in history to score two triple centuries with his iconic 333 against Sri Lanka.
Along with his elite batting, Gayle added more value compared to other opening batsmen due to his ability to bowl effective off-spin. He became the first West Indian cricketer to score in excess of 7,000 runs and take in excess of 150 wickets in ODIs. Add his 240 international catches and it makes him a genuine all-around threat and should rightly be considered as one of the greats of modern cricket.
Notable Records:
- Highest run scorer for the West Indies in ODIs and T20Is (10,480 & 1,899).
- Leading run scorer in all forms of T20s.
- Most centuries in T20 cricket (22).

- Highest individual T20 score (175* Bangalore vs. Pune, IPL).
